The Arab League asked the UN to send a Joint UN-Arab league monitoring team to Syria. The League sought the nomination of a special envoy to head the Joint monitoring mission.


The new mission would have different mandate, it will consist of international observers and will have more members. The Observer’s mission earlier went to Syria in December with 165 members, it was suspended by the Arab League on 28 January 2012 due to increasing violence there.
