The Delhi Police, following a court order on 29 November 2010, registered a case of sedition against Arundhoti Roy, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and others. It was alleged in the case that Arundhati Roy, Geelani and others had given anti-India speeches at a convention on Kashmir, entitled Azadi:The Only Way. The Delhi Police registered cases under Section124 A (Sedition), Section153 A (promoting enmity between different groups and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), Section 153B (imputations, assertions, prejudicial to national integration), Section 504 (insult intended to provoke breach of peace) and Section 505(statements conducing to public mischief) of the IPC and section13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Besides Arundhati Roy and Syed Geelani case of sedition was registered against Varavara Rao, a revolutionary poet, Delhi University Professor SAR Geelani, Sheikh Shaukat Hussain, Sujato Bhadra and Shuddhabrata Sengupta .
The court registered the case on the basis of complaint filed by Sushil Pandit in the court under Section 156(3) of the Criminal Procedure Act.
Arundhati Roy is an Indian novelist, essayist and activist. She focuses on issues related to social justice and economic inequality. She won the Booker Prize in 1997 for her novel, The God of Small Things. She was also associated with Narmada Bachao Andolan along with Medha Patkar.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani is a leader of hardline faction in Hurriyat Conference.
