The voting for fifth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 cocluded on May 6, 2019 in 51 constituencies across seven states. The fifth phase saw polling in 14 seats of Uttar Pradesh, 12 of Rajasthan, 7 each of Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, 5 of Bihar and 4 of Jharkhand.
SC delays Ayodhya dispute hearing to August 15
The Supreme Court recently delayed the hearing of Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case to August 15, 2019. The time extension was granted following a request by the Chairman of the mediation panel, Retired SC judge, Justice F M Khalifullah. The apex court had earlier referred the case to the mediation panel. The panel was formed after it was observed that there is lack of consensus between the parties in the matter.
RIL acquires toy retailer Hamleys
Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) acquired toy retailer Hamleys in 67.96 million pounds all cash deal. The move would assist Reliance to become a major player in global toy market. Hamley was owned by C Banner International, a Chinese fashion conglomerate, since 2015 and was founded in 1881 by William Hamley.
Pope Francis recently issued ‘Motu Proprio’, a legal document of the church, declaring that those who suspect sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, are obliged to report it to the church authorities. The law will be applicable within the Church and has no obligation on individuals to report abuse to civil authorities like police. However, the law will not apply in the Confessional where people reveal their secrets to priests.
The Supreme Court recently ruled that it would not extend the deadline for the finalisation of the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC). The final NRC list will be released by July 31. The apex court gave the ruling after it was informed by Assam NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela that individuals who have objected to the NRC draft have failed to appear before panels dealing with such cases.
Trump imposes harsher sanctions on Iran’s iron, steel, copper and aluminium industry
US President Donald Trump imposed another set of sanctions on Iran’s iron, copper, steel and aluminium industry. The move is aimed at stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapon and intercontinental ballistic missiles. The sanctions come just a year after President Trump pulled the US out of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal, calling it one-sided.
PM Modi second most followed politician globally
PM Narendra Modi became the second most followed politician across the globe with a total audience of 110.9 million on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, surpassing the US President Donald Trump who has 96 million followers globally. The world’s most followed politician is the former US President Barack Obama.
India re-elected as Arctic Council’s Observer
India was recently re-elected as the Observer to the Arctic Council, the intergovernmental forum that “promotes cooperation and interaction among the Arctic States, Arctic indigenous communities and inhabitants of Arctic region on issues pertaining to sustainable development and environmental protection”. India first got the Observer status to the Council in 2013.
The Supreme Court rejected the review petition seeking 50 percent verification of Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in Lok Sabha Elections 2019. The petition was filed by 21 opposition parties. In its previous ruling on April 8, 2019, the apex Court directed the Election Commission to increase the random checking of VVPAT slips from 1 EVM to 5 EVMs.
The Supreme Court dismissed the complaint of sexual harassment against the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. The ruling came after in-house inquiry panel headed by Justice SA Bobde stated that it did not find any supporting evidence in the allegations of a dismissed SC employee who filed sexual harassment complaint against the CJI.

In Jammu and Kashmir, polling was held in Pulwama and Shopian districts of Anantnag and Ladakh constituencies.
