1. (a) Ministry of Civil Aviation
Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu on August 11, 2018 approved a proposal for setting up water aerodromes in the country. The approval comes after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued regulations in June 2018, prescribing procedures and requirement for licensing of water aerodromes.
2. (b) Justice VK Tahilramani
Justice Tahilramani will be taking over from Acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh, who had been tasked to serve the High Court after Chief Justice Indira Banerjee was elevated as the Supreme Court judge.
3. (c) Somnath Chatterjee
Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee passed away on August 13, 2018 morning after suffering a heart attack at a hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. A 10-time MP of the Lok Sabha, Chatterjee represented Burdwan, Jadavpur and Bolpur parliamentary constituencies of West Bengal from 1971 to 2009.
4. (d) Annie Zaidi
Indian author Annie Zaidi won the 2018 Hindu Playwright Award for her play ‘Untitled’ at the 14th edition of The Hindu Theatre Fest at the Taj Coromandel. The award, instituted in 2008, carries a prize of Rs 2 lakh for the best original, unpublished and unperformed play script in English.
5. (a) Axis Bank
Axis Bank became India’s first bank to introduce Iris Scan Authentication feature for Aadhaar-based transactions through its micro ATM tablets. The Iris scan technology is completely contactless and provides up to 98.2 percent authentication success rate and offers an edge over other prevalent biometric modes.
6. (b) International Youth Day
The International Youth Day is celebrated every year on August 12 to recognise the efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing global society. The 2018 theme was “Safe Spaces for Youth”.
7. (d) Sun
NASA has launched Parker Solar Probe, a historic mission to touch the sun. The car-sized spacecraft will travel directly into the Sun's atmosphere, about four million miles from its surface and more than seven times closer than any spacecraft has come before.
8. (a) Women
The Railways has decided to provide 50 per cent reservation to women in the upcoming RPF recruitment process, which will involve recruitment of around 9500-10000 RPF jawans. The recruitment process will reportedly be fully computerized.
9. (c) Rs 66,000 crore
The Union Government has unlocked green funds worth over Rs 66,000 crore to increase the country’s forest cover. The fund is an accumulated amount of money, which user agencies have been depositing as compensation for diverting forest land for non-forest purposes.
10. (b) Maharashtra
Maharashtra government has expanded the scope of the loan waiver scheme by extending the benefits to every member of the farmer's family in case of a separate loan account. Earlier, the farmer's family as one unit was considered for claim waiver of Rs 1.50 lakh agricultural debt.

World Elephant Day was observed on August 12, 2018 to help conserve and protect elephants from the numerous threats they face. The inaugural World Elephant Day was launched in 2012 to bring attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants. India has a little over 27,000 wild Asian elephants. Yet, these animals face an uncertain future in the country.
