An underwater survey of the Mullaperiyar dam was started on 13 March 2011 to collect data for a technical analysis of its condition and the threat if it poses any.
The Empowered Committee on the Mullaperiyar dispute, appointed by the Supreme Court had formed an expert team to conduct the survey. Kerala and Tamil Nadu are represented by their officials in the survey. Prior to beginning the survey scientists and engineers of the Central Soil and Materials Research Station worked on installation of the remote-operated underwater vehicle and other equipment on 12 March 2011.
The underwater pictures which will be taken by the vehicle can be seen on monitors and the data will be provided for a technical study at the New Delhi laboratory of the research station.
The government of Tamil Nadu has proposed an increase in the storage level of the dam from the currently maintained 136 feet to 142 feet. The Kerala government has opposed this move, citing safety concerns for the more than hundred year old bridge and especially for the thickly populated districts downstream.
