The Indian Union Sports Ministry on 28 Jan 2010 liberalised and rationalised the procedures for importing weapons and ammunition and the resale of used weapons by renowned shooters. The earlier procedure was time consuming and caused escalation of the cost of import. The shooter can now directly approach the Director General of Foreign Trade after getting the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) recommendations for acquiring ammunitions. The shooter will not have to seek Customs Duty Exemption Certificate from the Ministry anymore. Shooters can self-certify and provide essential documents for exemption of customs duty and can import higher quota of ammunition depending upon the number of events he / she participates in.
