1. (a) Leena Nair

French luxury fashion house Chanel named Leena Nair, Chief Human Resources Officer of Unilever, as its new global CEO on December 14, 2021. Leena Nair’s name is now added to the list of leaders of Indian origin who have acquired significant positions in top global firms. 

2. (a) Harnaaz Sandhu 

India's Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned Miss Universe 2021 at the 70th Miss Universe Pageant in Eilat, Israel on December 13, 2021. The 21-year-old has created history by bringing home the crown 21 years after Lara Dutta won it in 2000. She was crowned Miss Universe by Mexico's Andrea Meza, the current Miss Universe. 

3. (b) Army Chief General MM Naravane

Indian Army Chief Gen MM Naravane has been appointed as the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee because of his seniority among the three service Chiefs. The position of head of the Chiefs of Staff Committee fell vacant after the death of the CDS Bipin Rawat in the IAF helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu on December 8, 2021.

4. (a) First Deputy Prime Minister

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was India's first deputy Prime Minister and was popularly known as 'Iron Man of India'. He played a key role in the Indian freedom movement, especially in unifying India post-independence. 

5. (c) December 16th

Vijay Diwas in India is observed annually in India on December 16 to commemorate the country’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war that led to the formation of Bangladesh. The day pays homage to the soldiers who fought bravely during the war which ultimately helped the Indian Armed Forces in establishing their prowess. 

6. (a) Durga Puja in Kolkata 

Durga Puja in Kolkata has been included by UNESCO in its representative list of 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity'. It is now among the 14 Indian elements on the ICH list.

7. (a) 21 years

Union Cabinet on December 15, 2021 cleared a bill to raise women's legal marriage age from 18 to 21 years after reviewing a proposal from a specially constituted task force. The task force had made its recommendations after holding extensive consultations with experts and young adults, especially young women.

8. (a) West Bengal

The Economic Advisory Council to Prime Minister recently released a report on the ‘Index on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy’. The report on the literacy rate in India is an indicator of literacy among children below the age of 10 years in Indian states that are further divided into different categories. On one hand, in the 'large states category', West Bengal has topped the charts while Bihar is on the bottom, Kerala can be seen on a top spot in the ‘small states category’.

9. (a) Bhutan

Bhutan has honored Prime Minister Modi with the country's highest civilian award- Ngadag Pel gi Khorlo. It is an acknowledgment of unconditional friendship between India and Bhutan which has further strengthened under PM Modi's leadership. 

10. (c) North Korea

North Korea has banned its citizens from laughing, shopping and drinking from December 17, 2021 as a part of 11-day mourning on the 10th anniversary of former leader Kim Jong-il.

11. (d) Priyank Panchal 

Priyank Panchal has replaced injured vice-captain Rohit Sharma in India's Test squad for the South Africa tour. Priyank Panchal has been a regular performer in India's domestic circuit. He has been the captain and top scorer for the Gujarat Ranji Trophy team for several years. 

Max Verstappen was crowned Formula One world champion after a dramatic season-ending at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 12, 2021. Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton who was heading for his 8th title, to win his first-ever Formula One title. He has become the first Dutch world champion. Hamilton's Mercedes team protested against Verstappen's win.
