1. (b) Russia

Russia on April 12, 2019 announced that it had honoured Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Order of St Andrew the Apostle, the highest order of the Russian Federation, for promoting partnership and friendly relations between the two countries.

2. (b) Bhutan

The Bhutan government has decided to send the bill for ratification of the Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal Motor Vehicle Agreement for road and rail connectivity to its upper senate. The BBIN initiative is a big initiative in the region, which is aimed at improving rail and road connectivity in the region. However, only Bangladesh, India and Nepal have implemented the agreement, Bhutan is yet to accord its ratification of the agreement.

World Heritage Day, also known as the ‘International Day for Monuments and Sites’, was observed across the world on April 18, 2019 with an aim to create awareness among the people to conserve and protect the valuable assets and cultural heritage across the world.

4. (a) Myanmar

The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize 2019 was awarded to Reuters’ reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo for their exceptional courage in reporting on alleged human rights violations in Myanmar’s state of Rakhine. The award carries prize money of USD 25000.

5. (a) Raavana 1

Sri Lanka on April 18, 2019 launched its first satellite ‘Raavana-1’ into space from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia’s East Shore. The satellite, which weighs around 1.05 kg, will have the lifespan of around one and a half years. The satellite was designed and built at the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan by two Sri Lankan research engineers.

6. (a) Bajrang Punia

Top Indian grappler Bajrang Punia regained the world number one spot in the men's 65kg freestyle category in the rankings issued by United World Wrestling on April 17, 2019.  The 25-year-old Indian, who won gold in the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games as well as a silver in the World Championships last year, secured 58 ranking points ahead of Akhmed Chakaev of Russia, who has 21 points.

7. (b) Vellore

The Election Commission of India has cancelled polling Tamil Nadu’s Vellore constituency on the grounds of misuse of money. The South Indian state will go to polls for 38 out of the total 39 Lok Sabha seats on April 18, 2019, during the second phase of polls. Vellore polls have been rescinded following reports of the large-scale illegal flow of cash.

8. (b) Notre-Dame Cathedral

The Notre-Dame Cathedral in central Paris, France almost burned down in a devastating fire that began on April 15, 2019. The fire completely destroyed the spire of the iconic structure and two-thirds of its largely medieval roof. UNESCO experts have agreed to help in rebuilding the structure.  

9. (a) Nirbhay

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on April 15, 2019 successfully test fired indigenously designed Long Range Sub-Sonic Cruise Missile “Nirbhay” from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Odisha.

10. (d) Measles

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised alarm over a 300 percent increase in the case of measles globally in the first quarter of 2019 compared with last year. So far this year, 170 countries have reported 112,163 measles cases to WHO. At this time in 2018, 163 countries had reported 28,124 cases.

11. (d) Meena Kumari Maisnam

India finished with 5 medals in the  Boxing World Cup which concluded at Cologne, Germany on April 13, 2019. While Meena Kumari Maisnam continued her fine run to win gold in the 54 kg, reigning youth world champion Sakshi (57 kg) and India Open champion Pwilao Basumatary (64 kg) settled for the silver. Pinki Rani (51 kg) and Parveen ( 60 kg) won bronze.

12. (b) Mohammad Shtayyeh

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on April 13, 2019 sworn in a new government headed by Mohammad Shtayyeh, a long-time ally from his Fatah party. Mohammad Shtayyeh was administered the oath as the new Prime Minister of Palestine in Ramallah, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The new government was formed after former Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah resigned in January 2019.
