Wrestlers Yogeshwar Dutt and Sushil Kumar on 1 June 2014 won Gold and Silver respectively at the International wrestling tournament held in Sassari city of Italy.
London Olympics Bronze medalist Yogeshwar won the Gold medal in his new weight category of 65kg. On the other hand, two-time Olympic medalist Sushil won the Silver in his new weight category of 74kg.
Besides, World Championship bronze medalist Bajrang and Satywart Kadian won Silver medal in the 61kg category and 97kg category respectively. Krishan Kumar won bronze in the 120 category in men's freestyle.
In women’s category: Shilpi Sheoran and Joyti won the bronze in the 55kg category and in the 75kg category respectively.
Overall putting a strong performance before the Commonwealth Glasgow Games 2014, India won 7 medals which included 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. India has sent a team of 12 wrestlers to participate in the game.
Background
The World Wrestling Federation in 2013 dropped 60kg and 66kg from its programme and introduced variations in the other weight categories. Now, wrestlers from 66kg and 74 kg have to compete in one weight division.
Sushil had won a Bronze medal at Beijing Olympics in 2008 and a Silver medal at London in 2012 in the 66kg category. On the other hand, Yogeshwar had won a Bronze medal at London Olympics in 2012 in the 60kg division.
