Abroad and military voters—How can they register for the US Presidential elections?

To register for the U.S. presidential elections as an overseas or military voter, follow these steps:

Determine Eligibility

You can qualify as a military or overseas voter if you are:

  • A member of the active or reserve components of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard.
  • A spouse or dependent of a military member.
  • A U.S. citizen residing outside the United States.

Register and Request an Absentee Ballot

The primary method for military and overseas voters to register and request an absentee ballot is through the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). This form allows you to register to vote and request your ballot simultaneously.

Deadline: It's recommended to submit the FPCA by August 1 for the General Election to ensure you receive your ballot in time.

Complete the FPCA

You can fill out the FPCA online at the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website, then print and send it to your local election office. Make sure to check your state's specific deadlines and requirements for registration.

Receive Your Ballot

Once your FPCA is processed, you should receive your absentee ballot approximately 45 days before the election. If you do not receive it in time, you can use the Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot (FWAB) as a backup option.

Vote and Return Your Ballot

After filling out your ballot, return it according to your state’s instructions:

  • By Mail: Ensure your ballot is postmarked by Election Day and received by your local election office within the required timeframe (often within 7 days after Election Day).
  • By Fax/Email: Some states allow ballots to be returned electronically under certain conditions.

Check Registration and Ballot Status

You can verify your registration status and check if your ballot was received by contacting your local election office or using resources available on the FVAP website.
