Independence Day 2024: Every year on 15 August, India celebrates Independence Day, which is one of the most significant events in Indian history. This day honours when India became an independent nation by severing its ties to British colonial control in 1947. This historic event is a monument to the millions of people who gave their lives in the independence movement, their unwavering resilience, and their indomitable spirit.

India's path to independence was filled with challenges, sacrifice, and relentless determination. India's freedom fighters displayed unmatched courage and determination starting from the early revolt in 1857 to the nonviolent struggle spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi. The national movement against colonial rule was largely rallied by the Quit India Movement of 1942. On August 15, 1947, India finally gained its long-awaited independence after years of persistent struggle.

The Know India website mentions: “The Independence Day of India, which is celebrated religiously throughout the Country on the 15th of August every year, holds tremendous ground in the list of national days, since it reminds every Indian about the dawn of a new beginning, the beginning of an era of deliverance from the clutches of British colonialism of more than 200 years.”

“It was on 15th August 1947 that India was declared independent from British colonialism, and the reins of control were handed over to the leaders of the Country. India's gaining of independence was a tryst with destiny, as the struggle for freedom was a long and tiresome one, witnessing the sacrifices of many freedom fighters, who laid down their lives on the line,” it adds.

The path to an independent India was difficult and full of obstacles. The Indian population's intense yearning for independence was sparked by decades of oppression under British colonial authority. Many visionary leaders sowed the seeds of resistance to oppose the colonial mindset.

The nation celebrates Independence Day with tremendous pride and emotion. The national flag, Tiranga, is hoisted with pride on government buildings, homes, and public places. People from all walks of life take part in parades, cultural events, flag-hoisting ceremonies, and patriotic anthems that fill the air.

Special assemblies and competitions are held by schools and colleges to foster a sense of patriotism among the younger generation. Several community events, including cleaning campaigns and social welfare programs, are held to commemorate the day.

Which Independence Day is this year in India? Is It the 77th or 78th Independence Day?

On August 15, 2024, India will commemorate its 78th Independence Day. Considering that we are celebrating 77 years of independence, this may sound contradictory. But August 15, 1948, marked the first anniversary of independence. Thus, even though it's the 77th anniversary of our liberation from British domination, this is our 78th commemoration of this momentous occasion.

Regardless of the year, Independence Day stands as a powerful reminder of India's illustrious history and its promising future. It’s a day to honour past accomplishments, confront current challenges, and enthusiastically embrace the goals of tomorrow.
