Ermira "Mira" Murati was born on December 16, 1988, in Vlorë, Albania. She is an engineer and one of the world's leading technology executives, renowned for her remarkable achievements as the Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI toward the innovative AI technologies of ChatGPT and DALL-E.

Early Life and Education

She secured a scholarship to attend the United World College of the Pacific, in Canada, when she was just 16 years old. She graduated in 2005 before attending college on both sides of the Atlantic. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Colby College, graduating in 2011. She also received her Bachelor of Engineering degree from the Thayer School of Engineering from Dartmouth College, graduating in 2012. Dartmouth conferred an honorary Doctor of Science degree upon her in 2024 in acknowledgement of her service and contributions to the field of technology and engineering.

Career 

Murati began as an intern with Goldman Sachs but advanced to become an Advanced Concepts Engineer for Zodiac Aerospace. She was employed by Tesla since 2013, initially as its Senior Product Manager for Model X. Later, before joining OpenAI in 2018 as Vice President of Applied AI and Partnerships, Murati was with Leap Motion. She was promoted to CTO in May 2022 and managed several projects, and teams that focused on machine learning for the creation of multiple advanced AI models.

Contributions to OpenAI

She was the guiding force for OpenAI in bringing it closer to completing its mission in developing and deploying ethical AI. She also led the technical direction for several of the company's more high-profile projects, such as the GPT series of language models. She stood out at the industry-leader level; for example, Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella recognized her ability to build effective teams and drive innovation.

Murati briefly filled the CEO's position at OpenAI after a leadership transition in November 2023, before returning to her role as chief technology officer within a few months. It was in September 2024 that she announced she would be leaving OpenAI after six and a half years on the job, seeking time for exploration of her own.
