ABVP Wins All Seats In Kerala College Student Union Elections After 40 Years, Ousts SFI

The ABVP candidates won each of the 12 positions in the student union, marking a significant change in the electoral outcome at an institution where the Left-backed SFI had maintained its influence for several years. The result comes amid recent political changes in Tripunithura, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took control of the municipality after 45 years.

Reacting to the ABVP’s victory in Keralam, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said “While a few anarchist voices in the national capital claim that the government and Prime Minister Modi Ji have abandoned the cause of students, the democratic verdict from Kerala offers a clear rebuttal.”

“ABVP has swept every post in the student union elections at Tripunithura Government Sanskrit College a campus under Left influence for decades. This mandate came through the free votes of students, not slogans. The real students and the real urgency of the youth stand firmly with the vision of national progress and opportunity that Honourable Prime Minister Modi Ji represents,” he added.

ABVP Calls Result Rejection Of SFI Policies

Following the result, the ABVP described the victory as a rejection of what it termed the SFI’s “anti-student policies”. A representative of the organisation said the outcome could provide momentum to ABVP units on other campuses in Kerala.

The ABVP also alleged that the previous student union had not done enough to promote Sanskrit-related activities and questioned the utilisation of funds collected from students. The organisation further claimed that an adequate number of student programmes were not conducted during the previous tenure.

These claims were made by the ABVP following the election result and represent the organisation’s assessment of the previous student union’s functioning.

Kerala College Result Comes After DUSU Elections

The Tripunithura result comes days after the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election results, where ABVP also won three of the four central panel positions.

In the DUSU elections, Yash Dabas won the president’s post, while Riya Chhawdi was elected secretary and Lakshya Raj Singh won the joint secretary’s position. The vice-president’s post was secured by independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, preventing an ABVP sweep of all four central posts. 

The DUSU results were declared after 20 rounds of counting. Dabas defeated NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena in the presidential contest, while Shokeen emerged victorious in the vice-president election with 30,615 votes. 

With the Tripunithura college election now also returning all eight posts to ABVP, the two results have put the organisation’s recent student-union election performances in Delhi and Kerala in focus. However, the contests were conducted at different institutions and under different electoral settings, with the Kerala result concerning a single college and the DUSU result covering Delhi University’s central student-union panel.
