Students of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi have come out on the streets to protest against the university rules for women safety. They held a candle light march and asked the university to change the curfew timing in the girls hostels. The current timing is 10 pm. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad unit also held a torchlight procession. AISA Disha and BSM organised a joint protest and women students took out a march of their own. Students Demand Curfew Change And Better Campus Safety

The protesters raised many concerns about campus safety rules and about the restrictions placed on women students. They also spoke about administrative accountability. They want the curfew timing changed and they want the university to listen to them. Their demands also include working streetlights and proper roads. They want the basic problems in the hostels to be fixed so that students feel safe on the campus.

Protesters Seek Chief Proctor’s Resignation

The students are demanding the resignation of Chief Proctor Prof. Sandeep Pokhariya. They allege harassment of students. They also point to lapses in campus security and to the way the university handles disciplinary action. A student named Puneet said that every single student is out on strike. He said they will keep protesting at the central office until their demands are met. His demands cover the resignation of the Chief Proctor and fixing the streetlights and solving the basic problems with the roads and the hostel and making sure students are safe. He added that the university is acting completely useless. It rejects all their demands on one hand and refuses to talk to them on the other. Puneet also questioned the free allotment of a university auditorium to AISA President Neha Bora for a programme held on September 12, 2026. He said the allotment should be investigated. He said no one is stopping any event but the university facilitating such a person is completely wrong. He also said the words used for the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister were not appropriate and students are protesting against this.
