India celebrates September 15 as Engineer's Day every to appreciate the contributions of Bharat Ratna awardee Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, fondly known as Sir MV. The engineering legend Sir MV was born on this day in 1861. Google has dedicated its doodle today to celebrate his 158th birthday. The doodle shows a sketch of Visvesvaraya and a bridge - bridges are among his most notable projects -in the background. Sir MV was also referred to as the father of engineers by many because of the kind of work he did.
Here's all you need to know about Sir MV
- Visvesvaraya was born to Mokshagundam Srinivasa Shastry, a noted Sanskrit scholar, in Muddenahalli village in Karnataka.
- After complete his primary education in Chickballapur, he went to Bengaluru (then Bangalore) to complete his high school. Visvesvaraya completed his bachelor of arts (BA) from the University of Madras he went to Pune to pursue civil engineering. He did his civil engineering from College of Science and then joined the PWD (Public Works Department) of Bombay.
- He first installed floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune in 1903. Later, he installed dams at Gwalior's Tigra and Mysuru’s Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS). Because of the excellent designs of floodgates, he became popular as floodgates man. Visvesvaraya later got the designs patented.
- He was the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. He encouraged private investment during that time and became famous as 'Father of Modern Mysore' because of his contribution to the society.
- He was awarded the British knighthood by King George V in 1915 and hence has the honorific 'sir'.
- After Independence, Visvesvaraya was awarded the Bharat Ratna - the highest civilian award of the Republic of India - in 1955.
- Visvesvaraya also got a fellowship from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. He later became a member of the London Institution of Civil Engineers. There are numerous universities, including Visvesvaraya Technological University in Belagavi, named after him.
