The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay has announced that the classes of students enrolled in 1st Year of UG courses will be conducted in the online mode for the semester. The official notification regarding the same was shared by Dr Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director, IIT Bombay on social media. Students who have taken admission in the 1st Year of undergraduate courses in the prestigious institute will be required to attend the 1st semester online.
IIT Bombay Online Classes for 1st Year UG Students
As per the official notification shared by the IIT Bombay Director, the orientation programme for the new batch will start on 11th November 2020 and the classes will commence from 16th November 2020 onward. The first week of instruction, said Dr Chaudhuri, will be a "zero" week, where 1st year UG students will be guided on how to attend lectures and appear for exams online. He elaborated that the student mentors will be reaching out to the fresh batch of students enrolled beforehand and helo them get properly oriented in order to ensure a smooth onboard. In addition, there will be an orientation for parents or guardians as well as they need to help the students to study from home, he added.
Semester Planning For 1st Year UG Batch
Dr Chaudhuri said the semesters have been planned by the institute in a manner that students are complete the entire academic year by the end of June 2021. Post the completion of the 1st semester, students will receive one month of summer vacation next year, following which semester dates will get synchronised with the rest of the batches. The academic year at IIT Bombay generally runs semester-wise from August to December and January to June. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic this year, the autumn and spring semesters for the fresh UG batches held from November to March and from March to July as mentioned in the offer letter provided to the students.
Curriculum and Facilities for 1st Year UG Batch
The IIT Bombay Director said that there will be no change in the overall curriculum or subject syllabi for the 1st Year UG students. However, labs and workshop have been deferred to the subsequent semester as an additional load. Students enrolled in 1st Year UG batch have been asked to be fully equipped with basic facilities to attend classes online. Also, students who do not have resources for online education, the institute plans to identify and support them with the requisite facilities. Hostel accommodation, as mentioned in the offer letter, will not be provided by the institute as of now due to paucity of available rooms and Covid-19 restrictions.
