
IIT UAE to be set up in Dubai: In a historic development, India has decided to establish its premier technology school – IIT or Indian Institute of Technology in Dubai. IIT UEA as it is being called, for now, will be set up by the Indian Government as part of the India-UAE trade deal signed on 18th February 2022. This would be the first-ever Institute of National Importance being set up in a foreign country, outside of India.
IIT UAE under CEPA Bilateral Deal
As per media reports, the decision to set up IIT UEA was taken as part of a bilateral deal signed between both the country on Friday. The deal named Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, CEPA was signed after a bilateral meeting in which representatives of both the countries held on 18th February. The meeting was led by the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on the Indian side, while UEA was represented by UEA’s Minister of Economy, Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri & Minister of State for Foreign Trade Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi. At the meeting, it was decided that as part of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, a technology institute would be set up by India in the UEA.

Indian Institute of Technology – IITs are India’s premier technology schools that are set up and operated under the aegis of the Union Education Ministry. These institutes are devoted to pushing boundaries of technology and research ahead. The institutes are governed under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which has declared them as Institutes of National Importance. Currently, there are a total of 23 IITs with a total intake of around 16,000 seats for undergraduate programmes.
