Delhi’s Jamia Milli Islamia is set to be plastic-free from October 2, 2019, marking the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The entire campus of JMI which includes the Jamia Community Centre, hostels, canteens, coffee houses, shops will become plastic-free as the university has decided to ban all single-use plastic items in the college campus.
The plastic items to be banned includes plastic bottles, cups, glasses and other items such as polythene bags and plastic items which are less than 50 microns, cutlery items including plates, cups, straws, etc. the cutlery and other decorative items made from Styrofoam will also be banned.
The university has urged all the students to strictly follow the ban order and is also set to impose fine of Rs. 500 on every rule violation. The banning of plastics is due to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation at the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day 2019 asking the citizens to stop the usage of single-use plastics items to prevent the degradation of the environment.
