The Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) is expected to admit girls as well, as per reports from the next academic year. In a recent hearing conducted, the Centre has submitted to the Supreme Court that girls will be allowed to take admissions to RMS from the 2022-23 academic year.
The matter of Rashtriya Military Schools was being observed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice MM Sundresh and the bench observed that the affidavit submitted provides enough assurance about the induction of women in these schools from the next academic year.
Petition in Supreme Court
The petitioners had taken the case to the Supreme Court in the hope of getting a resolution on the issue of admitting Women to the National Defense Academy, Sainik Schools, Rashtriya Military Schools. The matter received attention ever since the government announced that women will be admitted to NDA.
The Rashtriya Military Schools are English medium and are known to be predominantly for boys serving as a good base for those wanting to be inducted into the NDA or armed forces. Once admitted here the students will be trained and prepared as future soldiers.
Over the last 2 years, the matter of representation of women in Rashtriya Military Schools, NDA, Sainik Schools, etc has been discussed with many celebrating the news of women being allowed to appear for the NDA exams in 2021. The decision being considered as a landmark has opened many doors for women and girls aimed to promote equality.
