Sikkim state government has launched ‘Udbhav’ promoting hygienic practices for school-going children in the state. According to the release issued by the state every child-friendly school requires appropriate hygiene practices keeping the school environment clean and free of smells and stopping the transmission of harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
Project ‘Udbhav’ was launched in 10 schools in Sikkim in association with the Education Department of Sikkim and Alkem Foundation and Sulabh School Sanitation Club, New Delhi. The project has been launched with an aim to ensure that all the students continue their studies in a safe and healthy environment.
The campaign was launched at the Government Secondary School, Chakung, West Sikkim, by State Education Minister Kunga Nima Lepcha who stated that COVID-19 has left a great impact on the social and mental life of the students.
Project Udbhav details
State Additional Chief Secretary, Education Department, GP Upadhay stated that under the Udbhav project four COVID-19 Resource Centres will be opened in four schools in Sikkim. Efforts will also be made to train the students and teachers on implementing physical distancing and social hygiene practices along with promoting hygienic practices at all levels emphasizing handwashing and respiratory etiquette.
Programme will focus on the development of skills
Aditya Golay Tamang, Soreng MLA stated that the programme will focus on the development of life skills and the mobilization and involvement of the teachers, students, parents, communities, governments, and institutions to work together to improve hygiene, water, and sanitation conditions in the schools in Sikkim.
Time to plan and prepare for the immediate future
National Coordinator, Sulabh Wash in School Programme - Rupak Roy Choudhury, was of the opinion that it is time to plan and prepare for the immediate future with Udvhav will be trying to work on the fact that schooling is not equivalent to learning only but also includes social space, social process, to learn to live, things and act for one's own self and the collective good. Roy Choudhary while speaking about the project stated that close to 400 students and 100 teachers will be trained under the project which will provide school leaders with a clear path to establish procedures if the students or staff members become unwell. The project will also encourage the use of hand sanitizers, emphasizing the importance of proper use of masks and vending machines dispensing masks, sanitizers, and napkins which will be installed in the schools.
