In this era of technology and smart phones, higher education in India seems to be walking on a path of technical revolution as well. In an attempt to ensure transparency in the process of admission of students for the academic year 2012-2013, Jamia Millia Islamia University will be recording the interviews that precede admission into various courses at Anwar Jamal Kidwai Mass Communication and Research Centre. The official press release however does no where mention whether the students could view their interview at a later stage for admission related reasons.
The stated objective of the whole modus operandi is to ensure transparency and the accountability in the process of selection. Indian universities can endorse the concept of videotaping students while interviewing which is a patent from the West.
The student community along with the alumnae of the esteemed university has applauded this welcome change aimed at bringing about transparency in the admission process.
Jamia is one of the first Universities in India to implement videotaping as a method to ensure transparency in the whole admission process of a student. Though, it cannot be ruled out that the idea is novel and very just in itself, a lot of students can tend to fumble or get distracted during their interviews, due to the videotaping affair.
As a university ownership method, the idea is most likely to be a cool, breezy breathe to students and the college officials. Also, this new method would bring down the admissions influenced by political will. Whatever it might be, it is sure some exciting time for the current education pattern existing in the country.
