Few Sample Questions from this paper are as follows:

    Q. Write the structure of p-methyIbenzaldehyde.

    Q. Account for the following:

        (i) C ─ X bond length in aryl halides is smaller than in alkyl halides.

(ii) Solubility of alkyl halides in water is very low.

(iii) Allyl chloride undergoes hydrolysis more readily than n-propyl chloride.

    Q. (a) Why do the alcohols have greater boiling points than those of the corresponding aldehydes or ketones?

         (b) Write a chemical test to distinguish between benzoic acid and phenol.

    Q. (a) Write the chemical equations to illustrate the following name reactions:

          (i) Reimer-Tiemann reaction

          (ii) Kolbe’s reaction

         (b) Account for the following:

          (i) Phenols have a smaller dipole moment than methanol.

(ii) C ─ OH bond in phenols is stronger than that in alcohols.

(iii) Boiling point of phenols is higher than that of the alcohols of comparable masses.

    Q. (a) Illustrate the following reactions by giving a suitable example for each:

          (i) Cross Cannizzaro reaction

          (ii) Esterification

          (iii) Cross aldol condensation

          (b) Write the chemical reaction to convert:

           (i) Toluene to benzaldehyde

           (ii) Ethylbenzene to benzoic acid
