    Under the new assessment scheme that CBSE introduced this year, from this year onwards, students of class 9 will be taking the annual exams with a changed exam pattern. The dual assessment scheme which consisted of four formative and two summative assessments, has been terminated. From now onwards, students will have to study complete syllabus for which they will be tested annually.

    So, to get prepared for the new exam structure, it’s very important for students to know the latest examination pattern and question paper structure for class 9 annual exams 2018.

    CBSE Class 9 English Language and Literature Syllabus 2017-2018

Analysing this exam pattern, students can mold their preparation strategy appropriately and write a perfect exam to score optimum marks in their English Language and Literature exam 2018.

    CBSE Class 9 English Language and Literature Examination Pattern is as follows:

    CBSE class 9 English Language and Literature question paper will be conducted for 80 marks covering 100% syllabus. The remaining 20 marks are kept for internal assessment (IA) which will be added while calculating the overall grade.

     Internal Assessment will be conducted as per the following marks distribution:

    Internal Assessment

    20 Marks

    Periodical Test  (Average of three periodic tests)      

    10 Marks

    Note Book Submission

    05 Marks

    Subject Enrichment Activities like Listening and Speaking Skills

    05 Marks

    CBSE Class 9 English (Language and Literature) Question Paper format will be as given below:

    CBSE Class 9 English (Language and Literature) Question Paper will consist of a total of 11 questions divided into three section, viz., A, B and C. Section-Wise Weightage will be as follows:

    Testing format employed in each secition will be as follows:

    Section A

    Reading: 20 Marks

    • Question 1. A Factual passage with eight Very Short Answer Type Questions. [8 Marks]
    • Question 2. A Discursive passage with four Short Answer type Questions to test inference, evaluation and analysis with four Very Short Answer type Questions to test vocabulary. [12 Marks]

    Section B

    Writing and Grammar: 30 Marks

    • Question 3. Writing a diary/article in about 100-120 words based on visual or verbal clues. [8 Marks]
    • Question 4. Writing a short story based on a given outline or clues in about 200- 50 words.  [12 Marks]
    • Question 5. Gap filling with one or two words to test prepositions, articles, conjunctions and Tenses. [3 Mark]
    • Question 6. Editing or Omission. [4 Marks]
    • Question 7. Sentences reordering or sentence transformation in context. [3 Marks]

    Section C 

    Literature: 30 Marks

    • Question 8: One out of two extracts from prose/poetry/play. Four Very Short Answer Questions: two questions of one mark each on global comprehension and two questions of one mark each on interpretation. [4 Marks]
    • Question 9: Four Short Answer Type Questions from Beehive and Moments. (30-40 words each) [2 × 4 = 8 Marks]
    • Question 10: One out of two Long Answer type Questions from the Beehive and Moments. (100-120 words)[8 Marks]
    • Question 11: One out of two Very Long Answer Questions on prescribed novel. (150-200 words)[10 Marks]

    All questions are compulsory however some questions might have an internal choice to select from. 

    This CBSE class 9 Science examination pattern given here, has been designed as per the instructions given in CBSE Class 9 English Language and Literature syllabus and format followed in the sample papers released for class 10 English Language and Literature. Since, the course structure of class 9 is similar to that of class 10, therefore the question papers format to be used in class 9 English (Language and Literature) exam is also expected to be same as that used in class 10 English (Language and Literature) exam.
