    CBSE Class 9 English Language and Literature Examination Pattern is as follows:

    CBSE class 9 English Language and Literature question paper will be conducted for 80 marks covering 100% syllabus. The remaining 20 marks are kept for internal assessment (IA) which will be added while calculating the overall grade.

    CBSE Class 9 Syllabus 2018-2019: All Subjects

    Internal Assessment will be conducted as per the following marks distribution:

    Periodical Test  (Average of three periodic tests)

    CBSE Class 9 English (Language and Literature) Question Paper format will be as given below:

    CBSE Class 9 English (Language and Literature) Question Paper will consist of a total of 11 questions divided into three section, viz., A, B and C. Section-Wise Weightage will be as follows:

    Testing format employed in each secition will be as follows:

    Section A

    Reading: 20 Marks

    • Question 1. A Factual passage with eight Very Short Answer Type Questions. [8 Marks]
    • Question 2. A Discursive passage with four Short Answer type Questions to test inference, evaluation and analysis with four Very Short Answer type Questions to test vocabulary. [12 Marks]

    Section B

    Writing and Grammar: 30 Marks

    • Question 3. Writing a diary/article in about 100-120 words based on visual or verbal clues. [8 Marks]
    • Question 4. Writing a short story based on a given outline or clues in about 200- 50 words.  [12 Marks]
    • Question 5. Gap filling with one or two words to test prepositions, articles, conjunctions and Tenses. [3 Mark]
    • Question 6. Editing or Omission. [4 Marks]
    • Question 7. Sentences reordering or sentence transformation in context. [3 Marks]

    Section C

    Literature: 30 Marks

    • Question 8: One out of two extracts from prose/poetry/play. Four Very Short Answer Questions: two questions of one mark each on global comprehension and two questions of one mark each on interpretation. [4 Marks]
    • Question 9: Four Short Answer Type Questions from Beehive and Moments. (30-40 words each) [2 × 4 = 8 Marks]
    • Question 10: One out of two Long Answer type Questions from the Beehive and Moments. (100-120 words)[8 Marks]
    • Question 11: One out of two Very Long Answer Questions on prescribed novel. (150-200 words)[10 Marks]

    All questions are compulsory however some questions might have an internal choice to select from. 

    CBSE class 9 Science examination pattern given here, has been designed as per the instructions given in CBSE Class 9 English Language and Literature syllabus and format followed in the sample papers released for class 10 English Language and Literature. Since, the course structure of class 9 is similar to that of class 10, therefore the question papers format to be used in class 9 English (Language and Literature) exam is also expected to be same as that used in class 10 English (Language and Literature) exam.
