Jul 12, 2016 17:40 IST

Vice Chancellors of all the central universities in India have been notified by the University Grants Commission that they would have to provide at least 2 supernumerary seats for Jammu & Kashmir students in all of their affiliated colleges for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Jammu & Kashmir based students had previously written letters to UGC, asking them to grant to the two seats under supernumerary quota. Granting their wishes, the UGC in a letter has circulated the wish of HRD Ministry to provide these two seats in each of the central universities across the country.

According to the letter, “The Ministry of Human Resource Development had decided that two Supernumerary Quota seats will be made available to the students of Jammu and Kashmir who seek admission through centralized counseling in universities/colleges approved under Section 2(1)and 12 B of the UGC Act or recognized by AICTE and have at least one NBA approved course .”

The letter was circulated by the UGC secretary Jaspal S Sandhu, to the central university Vice Chancellors recently. The letter further stated, “I would feel highly obliged, if you kindly ensure that the two supernumerary seats in your esteemed university and colleges affiliated under your esteemed university are created for the students of Jammu & Kashmir.” This move would help getting admission of education and job opportunity deprived Jammu and Kashmir students and help them acquire skills to earn their livelihood henceforth.
