Common Syllabus to be adopted 19 Boards in the 2011 -2012 academic session
From the 2011 -2012 academic year, 19 boards including the CBSE will adopt a common core syllabus for mathematics and science. Now students will have the same syllabus across states and will offer a level playing field to all science students for various competitive examinations for higher education.
NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) and COBSE (Council of Boards of School Education in India) collaborated to develop the syllabus. Class XI (Class 11) students for the academic session 2011 -2012 will be the first to adopt the syllabus inthe following areas:
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Mathematics
The first board exam with the common syllabus will be conducted in 2013.
There are 32 Education Boards operating in India, of which 19 have confirmed the adoption of the common syllabus in 2011. CBSE and the CISCE (Indian School Certificate Examination) are part of the 19 boards that have adopted the common syllabus. The boards introducing the common syllabus include:
- CBSE
- CISCE
- Haryana Board
- Bihar Board
- Uttarkhand Board
- Goa Board
- Nagaland Board
- Jammu & Kashmir Board
- Rajasthan Board
- Kerala Board
- Assam Board
- West Bengal Board
The remaining boards are likely to introduce the common syllabus in the 2012 academic session. The UP Board has not yet confirmed its decision on the common syllabus.
