From Poverty to UPSC AIR 239: Pawan Kumar's Inspiring Journey to Becoming IAS

UPSC 2024 Success Story: Pawan Kumar, a native of Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, who secured the AIR 239 in the recently released result of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Service Examination (CSE), is celebrating his success in his mud house, where he has grown up in extreme poverty.

Pawan has experienced the hard reality of poverty since childhood. Raised in a modest mud home with an asbestos roof with lots of family's financial challenges. Despite these obstacles, Pawan had a single dream to become an IAS official and help his society.

Pawan Kumar’s Journey from Struggle to Success

Mr. Kumar failed the exam twice but persisted until he succeeded. On his third attempt, he excelled. His family has four bighas of agricultural land and a thatched hut. His father tilts and works to support them. As per Mr. Kumar’s sister Goldie, Pawan believed that education was the only key that helped them get out of the poverty and he only studied wherever he was at home. 

Pawan credits his amazing performance to his family, emphasising the importance of his parents and sisters in his life. "My family had a very big role to play in my journey, especially my parents and sisters," Pawan told ANI. This support structure has been important in nourishing his dreams despite all the challenges.

The internet was recently moved by a heartwarming video shared by IAS Officer Awanish Sharan, who recently posted a heartwarming video on his X (formerly Twitter) handle in which Pawan was seen distributing sweets among his family, a moment of pure joy and pride. 

Reacting to it, netizens congratulated Pawan Kumar for the feat. A user shared, “पवन जी को बहुत बहुत बधाई ।इनका घर देखकर मुझे भी वो दिन याद आ गये जब मेरे भी चचेरे भाई साहब 1985 में यूपीएससी पास किये थे उनका घर तो पवन जी से भी बुरा था उस समय पिछले साल ही भारत सरकार के टेक्सटाइल सचिव से रिटायर किये है ।”

The UPSC exam's challenges were no match for Pawan's determination. He enhanced his abilities with each attempt, eventually achieving an outstanding All India rank of 239. The celebration at his modest home represented not just his personal win but also the collective victory of his family and town.
