ITI Full Form: ITI stands for Industrial Training Institute. It is a training institute run by the government to provide industrial training to the 10th-passed students. It was established in 1950 by the Directorate-General for Employment and Training (DGET), the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship and the Government of the Union. These institutes are designed to provide industrial training to students who want to gain technical skills instead of pursuing higher education.

ITI Course Duration

Training periods for ITI range from six months to two years in over 130 different specialities. After completion of the training, trainees write the All India Trade Test (AITT). Successful candidates receive the National Trade Diploma (NTD).

Eligibility Criteria for ITI Course In India

The main goal of an ITI is to prepare candidates for the workforce by providing industry-specific training. ITIs also offer apprenticeship programs to help achieve this objective. A candidate needs to fulfil the following eligibility criteria to get admission into the ITI:

  • The candidates must be between 14 and 40 years old.
  • Applicants should have passed the 10th or equivalent exam from a recognised board, with a minimum score of 35%.

Types of Courses Offer in ITIs

ITIs generally offer two types of courses: engineering and non-engineering.

  • Engineering programs focus on technical skills and cover topics in technology, engineering, science, and mathematics. 
  • Non-engineering courses generally do not emphasize technical content. Instead, they concentrate on languages, soft skills, and other industry-specific general skills and knowledge.

Admission Process of ITI

Under National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) guidelines, admission to ITIs is based on merit or a written examination. In contrast, admission to private ITIs is conducted directly. Admission to ITI courses is mainly based on the following ways:
