How does UPI work?

To make payments using UPI, users must first link their bank account to a UPI-enabled mobile app. Once linked, they can create a unique UPI ID, which serves as their identifier for receiving payments. To complete a transaction, the user needs to enter the recipient's UPI ID or mobile number and specify the amount. The transaction is then authorized through a PIN or biometric authentication on the user's mobile device, with the funds being instantly transferred from the user's bank account to the recipient's.

Benefits of UPI

  • Unified Platform: UPI provides a comprehensive solution for various payments, including peer-to-peer transfers, merchant transactions, and bill payments. Users can avoid the hassle of managing multiple apps.
  • 24/7 Accessibility: UPI enables users to make payments at any time, including weekends and holidays. This enhances convenience by removing restrictions tied to traditional banking hours.
  • Security Assurance: UPI prioritises security through a two-factor authentication process, ensuring that only authorised individuals can access and initiate transactions. In this process, UPI PIN also plays an important role.
  • End-to-end Encryption: UPI transactions are protected by end-to-end encryption, offering a strong defence against unauthorised interception or tampering with transaction data.
