Career Opportunities for fresh graduates in Mining sector
Due to the recent initiatives by the Government of India and the State Governments, in the last one year, there has been a lot of activity in Mining Sector in India. New mining leases are being awarded to Mining companies (Public Sector as well as private companies), particularly in Coal Mining. This is creating excellent job opportunities for the students that graduate in Mining courses like Diploma ( Polytechnic) and BTech from reputed Institutions like ISM Dhanbad, ICFAI University Jharkhand etc. This trend will go up in the next 5 years, as Iron ore mining is also expected to increase.
As Jharkhand is the largest Mining state in the country and is home to a large number of mining companies (Coal, Iron ore ,copper, Uranium etc. ) in Public sector (like Central Coalfields , BCCL , HCL etc.) and Private sector ( Like TISCO, Jindal etc.) , career opportunities are the largest in Jharkhand , though opportunities also exist in other states like West Bengal, Chhattisgarh , Maharashtra , Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
In view of this, 3 year Diploma (Polytechnic) in Mining, which is offered by reputed Institutions like ICFAI University, Jharkhand, is a golden opportunity. Besides exposure to relevant labs and workshops, students at ICFAI University, Jharkhand go through Vocational Training (Industry internships) in Mining Companies up to 6 months so that they can get hands-on exposure to Mining operations. If interested in a government job, a Diploma holder in Mining ( after completion of 3 years of Diploma ) , can go through one year of PDPT ( Post Diploma Practical Training) offered by BOPT, Ministry of HRD, Government of India for one year ,during which he will get stipend. After completion of the same and getting Gas testing certificate from DGMS, he is eligible for being posted as Overman in underground and opencast mines (coal or metal mines) in government mines like seven subsidies of the Coal India Ltd or in private mines like TISCO, ISCO, and Jindal. Overman is a supervisory job. In PSU Coal companies, Overman gets a monthly salary of about Rs. 35,000, besides perquisites and other benefits. Overman is the overall in charge of a district of a mine and is responsible for entire support, ventilation, electricity, coal transportation, proper maintenance of all machineries, safety of all workers etc. A mining diploma holder, after 2 years of experience, is eligible to appear for Second Class Managers’ examination conducted by the DGMS. After clearing the examination, he can be appointed as Assistant Manager, with a monthly salary of about Rs 60,000 besides perquisites and benefits.
However, an Engineering Graduate in Mining with BTech degree is eligible to be appointed as second Class Mining Manager, with a monthly salary of Rs 60,000 besides perquisites and benefits. After 2 years of experience, he is eligible for promotion after clearing First Class Mining Manager Examination. He can move up to the level of Chairman and Managing Director on the basis of performance. Alternatively, he can choose to work in teaching or research, wherein he is appointed as Scientific officer/Research Officer/Scientists in research organizations like CMRI and CFRI etc.
It is expected that in Coal India and its 7 subsidiaries alone , over 2,000 Overman vacancies are expected per year and balance mining companies may contribute additional 2,000 such positions. Likewise, over 400 vacancies are expected per year for Manager Positions. Now the demand for these positions is so much that a number of posts are vacant, as number of eligible applicants is far less than demand. The situation is likely to continue for the next 5 years. A rewarding career awaits the students that pursue Mining Courses like Diploma (Polytechnic) and BTech in reputed Institutes like ICFAI University Ranchi (Jharkhand), ISM Dhanbad etc.
