The UPSC publishes its notification – in the Employment Newspaper (Rozgar Samachar in Hindi) and on its website: upsc.gov.in – for the Civil Services every year in the month of December. Exceptionally, the notification may be published in the month of January also.
Ideally, one should not wait for the UPSC notification to start preparation for the Civil Services exam. Fresh candidates may collect important information from their teachers, friends, magazines and websites also. Because you are a fresher, you should first be acquainted with the Civil Services exam syllabus. You can start your preparation only when you know what all is to be studied. The notification would provide you important dates, syllabi of all the subjects and the plan of the exam. You may start your preparation now, and when the notification is made public, you can confirm if there is any change in the pattern of the exam or any syllabus relevant to you. The changes, if there are any, will be mentioned in the current syllabus with the notification.
Please note that the General Studies (GS) portion for the Civil Services exam will always remain in the syllabus, though little modifications (addition or deletion of topics) may occur. Thus, you may start studying the GS subjects without waiting for the notification. You may also start preparing the Current Affairs of the year, 2011. This way, you won’t lose anything and may gain an extra edge because of the early start. Thus, jagranjosh.com will advise you not to simply wait for the notification; start preparing for the 2012 UPSC Civil Services exam today itself.
