We all are surrounded by large number of solids around us. The physical state of a substance depends upon the two opposite forces. Intermolecular force is forces of attraction which exist among the molecules. Thermal energy is the opposite force. It tends to keep the constituent particle apart. These two forces are just opposite. Solid are rigid in nature and have a definite volume. Solid are almost incompressible. Intermolecular distances in solid are short and intermolecular forces are strong.
