Tips on Speed Reading Skills and Answering the Questions of a Reading Comprehension

In the Comprehension Section of the CSAT Paper, Reading habit and practicing extensive reading is required. Apart from reading a lot, you should practice Speed Reading. This will help you comprehending the passage faster and hence, score better in the Reading Comprehension passages.

The following are some points to speed up your reading skills and some easy ways to answer the questions asked in a Reading Comprehension:

•    Focus on the main words in a sentence

•    Check how much time you take in reading and then decrease the time you take to read every time you practice.

•    Identify main parts of the paragraph.

•    You can mark the important points/ words/sentences of a passage. However, to be quick and to answer in the UPSC CSAT, gradually you should be able to identify these without even marking them.

•    While reading, move your eyes fast from left to right, focusing on main words.

•    At home, after finishing an article, write the gist of that article. This will help you know how much you remember of that passage.

•    Improve your vocabulary everyday by learning 3/4 new word meaning along with the usage of the words.

•    Be attentive while reading a passage to avoid taking double time in recalling and going back to the already read paragraph.

•    All the answers of the questions are provided in the passage itself. You just need to form your sentences to answer in the right manner and try to be strict to the question that has been asked.

•    Do not give ambiguous answers to any question. The information to answer the questions will be found in the passage. So, you just have to present them according to the questions asked.
