The University Grants Commission (UGC) recommended that students enrolled in a regular degree course will now be able to pursue an additional degree at the same time under the banner of open or distance education mode from the same or a different university.
However the catch is that one cannot take two regular degrees at the same time. The Committee that has been set up by the Grants Commission has sought the opinion of vice chancellors of all universities in the country any implementation of the recommendations.
The UGC was formally established in November 1956 as a statutory body of the Government of India through an Act of Parliament for the coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education in India.
In order to ensure effective region-wise coverage throughout the country, the UGC has decentralized its operations by setting up six regional centres at Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bhopal, Guwahati and Bangalore.
The head office of the UGC is located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in New Delhi.
