The marks obtained in the prelims exam will be considered for admission into mains exam only. The prelims exam is a qualifying mark. As mentioned earlier, the marks of the mains exam and interview will be taken into account for the preparation of final merit list.

The final selection to the Civil Service will be done on the basis of marks obtained in the mains exam and Interview/Personality Test). Aspirants will be allotted to services keeping in view their ranks in the exam and the preferences chosen by them for the various Services and posts.

Candidates who clear the main exam will be called for an interview or personality test to assess their suitability for a career in public service. They will be interviewed by the commission and will be asked questions on matters of general interest.

The candidates will be judged based on their mental alertness, logical reasoning, critical powers of assimilation, balance of judgement, variety and depth of interest, etc.

The mains exam is a written exam and consists of 9 papers of conventional essay type of which two papers will be of qualifying in nature. Papers 1 to 7 will be considered for the merit list. The total mark of the exam will be 2025.

Yes, there will be negative marks for incorrect answers as below:

• There were four alternatives for the answers to every question. For each question for which a wrong answer is marked by the candidate, 0.33 of the marks will be deducted.
• If a candidate has marked more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happens to be correct
• No marks will be deducted for unanswered question

The Commission will publish a list of candidates to be qualified for Civil Service Mains Exam on the criteria of minimum qualifying marks of 33% in General Studies Paper 2 and total qualifying marks of General Studies Paper 1 of the prelims exam.

Candidates who will qualify for the exam will be called for the mains exam. UPSC CSE Mains Exam is scheduled to be held on 20 September 2024. Those who will find their roll number in the merit list will be required to appear for the mains exam on mentioned date and time.
