22. A particle starts moving from rest from a fixed point in a fixed direction. The distance s from the fixed point at a time t is given by s = t2 + at – b + 17, where a, b are real numbers. If the particle comes to rest after 5 sec at a distance of s = 25 units from the fixed point, then values of a and b are respectively
(A) 10, –33
(B) –10, –33
(C) –8, 33
(D) –10, 33
Ans : (B)
Sol.
When the particle comes to rest, then its velocity is zero.
And velocity can be found out by differentiating s

25. Let P(x) be a polynomial, which when divided by x – 3 and x – 5 leaves remainders 10 and 6 respectively. If the polynomial is divided by (x –3) (x–5) then the remainder is
(A) –2x + 16
(B) 16
(C) 2x – 16
(D) 60
Ans: (A)
Sol.
Let the remainder be ax + b
According to question,
P(x) = (x – 3)(x – 5) q(x) + (ax + b)
We have,
p(3) = 10
And p(5) = 6
Ans: (B)

28. In a certain town, 60% of the families own a car, 30% own a house and 20% own both a car and a house. If a family is randomly chosen, what is the probability that this family owns a car or a house but not both?
(A) 0.5
(B) 0.7
(C) 0.1
(D) 0.9
Ans : (A)
Sol.
The data in the question can be represented through Venn Diagram as;
From the above Venn diagram the percentage of the family owns a car or a house but not both is
(40 + 10)% = 50 %
So, the required probability is 0.5
29. The letters of the word COCHIN are permuted and all the permutations are arranged in alphabetical order as in English dictionary. The number of words that appear before the word COCHIN is
(A) 360
(B) 192
(C) 96
(D) 48
Ans: (C)
Sol.
In dictionary the words starting from CC, CH, CI and CN will appear first
Now, fixing CC the remaining 4 letters O, H, I and N can be arranged in 4! ways.
Similarly the words starting from CH, CI and CN will also be arranged in 4! ways.
So, number of words that appear before the word COCHIN is (4!)4 = 96
(A) 0 (zero)
(B) 2
(C) 5
(D) 3
Ans : (A)
Sol.
