International/World Current Affairs 2011. Washington-based Population Reference Bureau released a data sheet called the World’s Women and Girls showed that 47% of women in India were married by the age of 18

Washington-based Population Reference Bureau released a data sheet called the World’s Women and Girls showed that 47% of women in India were married by the age of 18. The average is higher even than of South Central Asia which India is part of. The data sheet also revealed that the figure in India is twice of Pakistan. In fact, India’s child marriage average is more than Africa’s.  Africa showed an average of 34%. Many African countries such as Sudan, Ghana and Nigeria did better than India. Even Afghanistan has a lower average (43%) than India.

The report has showed the poor status of women in India. The states such as Jharkhand, Bihar and Rajasthan have more child marriages in comparison to other parts of India.
