The first solar powered Textile Mill in Asia will come up in Parbhani district, Maharashtra. The Jai Bhawani women's cooperative textile mill will become the first Solar Powered textile mill in Asia.
The Chairman of Jai Bhawani Women cooperative textile mill announced on November 17, 2020 that the mill will soon operate on solar power.
Significance
The mill is located in Maharashtra's Parbhani district and many women in the district are expected to be given employment under the new project.
Key Highlights
•The Jai Bhawani Women cooperative textile mill is spread across 30 acres of land. It will majorly process cotton to cloth.
•The mill will undertake a lot of activities including ginning, pressing, weaving and spinning of cotton.
•The Chairman of the textile mill, Dr. Sampriya Rahul Patil said that the finest quality cotton will be procured from Parbhani itself, as it is a leading cotton producing district in Maharashtra.
•In fact, majority of the farmers in the state grow cotton, as producing cotton is seen as a profitable investment.
•According to Dr. Patil, the cost of the project will be Rs 100 crore.
•The operationalization of the mill is expected to give momentum to the industrial sector in the district.
Benefit |
•The Textile industry constitutes about 15 percent of India's total export earnings. The industry comprises both low-scale traditional textiles to large mills. •However, the main concern in the industry is power, as the electrical consumption alone accounts to almost 15-20 percent of the total production cost of these mills. •Hence, making the textile mills solar-enabled will help the industry reduce its energy consumption and increase their profit. |
Background
The Union Ministry of Textiles had launched Solar Energy Scheme for Powerlooms in 2018. Under this scheme, the centre offered assistance in form of capital subsidy to set up solar power plants to address power shortage issues in the powerloom units.
