In honor of Rabindranath Tagore, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared on Tuesday that the state's Karimganj district would be renamed Sribhumi. He asserted that the new name was inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's portrayal of the present-day Karimganj.

Announcement on X
In a post on X, the Chief Minister stated, "Over 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore had described modern-day Karimganj District in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’- the land of Maa Lakshmi. Today the #AssamCabinet has fulfilled this long-standing demand of our people."
The decision to rename Karimganj as Sribhumi would "reflect the expectations and aspirations of the people of the district," according to a photo posted by the chief minister of Assam.
Renaming of 'Kalapahar'
The recent renaming of 'Kalapahar' was a key topic discussed by him. He mentioned that the terms 'Kalapahar' and 'Karimganj' do not have roots in the Assamese or Bengali linguistic traditions.
Past Examples of Renaming
Several place names, including villages like Bhasoni Chowk in Barpeta, have already undergone renaming to reflect their cultural and historical significance.
Cultural Significance of Karimganj
He emphasized that the new name for Karimganj will maintain its cultural value. This decision aligns with the definitions found in Assamese and Bengali dictionaries.
Future Renaming Possibilities
"More places can be renamed to better reflect Assam's rich history and linguistic heritage," stated Himanta Biswa Sarma, hinting at ongoing efforts to align place names with Assam's cultural traditions.
In September, the central government renamed Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to Sri Vijaya Puram. Union Home Minister Amit Shah explained that this change reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to remove colonial influences from the country.
