The government declared on September 13 that Port Blair will now be known as "Sri Vijaya Puram" Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the government's decision, stating that Sri Vijaya Puram represents the triumph of our freedom struggle and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands' special place in it.

The Union Home Minister declared, "To rid the country of the colonial legacies, we have chosen to rename Port Blair as "Sri Vijaya Puram."

The Minister further explained the reason behind this decision on the social media platform “X” (formerly known as Twitter) writing "Inspired by the vision of PM @narendramodi Ji, to free the nation from the colonial imprints, today we have decided to rename Port Blair as “Sri Vijaya Puram. While the earlier name had a colonial legacy, Sri Vijaya Puram symbolises the victory achieved in our freedom struggle and the A&N Islands' unique role in the same.”

Talking about the historical significance of the city, Shah added that “Andaman & Nicobar Islands have an unparalleled place in our freedom struggle and history. The island territory that once served as the naval base of the Chola Empire is today poised to be the critical base for our strategic and development aspirations.”

“It is also the place that hosted the first unfurling of our Tiranga by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Ji,” Shah added.

The home minister paid tribute to Veer Savarkar and mentioned that it is also the location of the cellular jail where he and other freedom fighters fought for an independent India.

Shah went on to say that the island region that was once the Chola Empire's naval base is now positioned to be the vital foundation for our objectives for growth and strategy.

Port Blair was Named After?

It is noteworthy that Captain Archibald Blair, an East India Company official in the British colonial navy, inspired the naming of Port Blair, the capital city of the union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The city is home to several museums and the important naval base, INS Jarawa, of the Indian Navy. It also houses sea and air bases for the Indian Coast Guard, Andaman and Nicobar Police, and the Andaman and Nicobar Command, which is the first joint command of the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy.

In July, the government changed the names of the well-known 'Durbar Hall' and 'Ashok Hall' at Rashtrapati Bhavan to 'Ganatantra Mandap' and 'Ashok Mandap', respectively.
