Bhai Dooj 2021: Bhai Dooj also known as Bhaubeej, Bhai Tika is an Indian festival that is celebrated during the Diwali festival. The Bhai Dooj festival celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. The Bhai Dooj festival is celebrated two after Diwali which is the second lunar day (Dwitiya Tithi) of Shukla Paksha as per the Hindu calendar. This year, Bhai Dooj 2021 is being celebrated on November 6, 2021.

Bhai Dooj: Significance, Facts

On the occasion of Bhai Dooj, sisters apply red tilak on their brother’s forehead and perform an aarti ceremony for their brothers while vowing to protect their brothers from all evils and praying for their long-life and well-being. The tilak and arti ceremony is performed on Bhai Dooj shubh muhurat. The brothers in return offer them gifts or cash.  

Hindu mythology and legends tell stories about the beginning of Bhai Dooj as a festival in two prominent stories, one about Lord and his sister Subhadra, and another about Lord Yamraj and his sister Yamuna. The Bhai Dooj festival holds a special significance for the brother-sister bond.

Legends tell that after slaying the demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra who greeted him with a tilak ceremony and offered him sweets and flowers. In another story, legends tell that when Lord Yamraj had gone to visit his twin sister Yamuna, she greeted him with a tilak ceremony and fed him sweets. Hence, Bhai Dooj came into being with tilak and aarti ceremony have a significant part.

Difference between Bhai Dooj and Rakshabandhan

As per Hindu mythology, Bhai Dooj is a celebration of the siblings bond between the brother-sister duo. Whereas Rakshabandhan can be celebrated among friends, mother-sons, and family relatives. Also, Bhai Dooj is celebrated during the Diwali festival and Rakshabandhan is celebrated during the Savan month of the Hindu calendar.

Another difference is that on Bhai Dooj, sisters perform aarti and tilak ceremony and vow to protect their brothers while on Rakshabandhan, sisters tie a rakhi which symbolizes the vow of the brother to protect her sisters.
