Brahmaputra River Dammed for Chinese Hydropower Project

Chinese Hydropower Project on Tibetan stretch of Brahmaputra known as Yarlung Tsangpo.

China started damming Brahmaputra river, the Tibetan bit of which is known as Yarlung Tsangpo in early November 2010 for the construction of 510 MW Zangmu hydropower project. Yarlung Zangbo river was closed on 12 November 2010 to begin construction. The total investment in the project is 7.9 billion yuan ($1.2 billion) and the project work is expected to stretch beyond 2014 when the first set of generators would be made operational. The Brahmaputra river will be dammed for the first time for the construction of the project.
