Cabinet approves continuation of ACROSS scheme – Know significance

The ACROSS scheme has been approved for continuation from 2021-26. Know significance and the eight sub-schemes.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 24, 2021, approved for continuing the umbrella scheme ‘Atmosphere & Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems & Services (ACROSS)’ of the Ministry of Earth Sciences during 2021-26 at a cost of Rs 2,135 crores. The ACROSS scheme comprises eight sub-schemes which are being implemented by the units of the Earth Sciences Ministry namely the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).

Approval for continuing ACROSS scheme: Significance

The continuation of ‘Atmosphere & Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems & Services (ACROSS)’ scheme during 2021-26 will offer improved weather, climate, ocean forecast and services, and other natural hazards related services.

The ACROSS scheme will ensure benefits to the end-user through various services such as agro-meteorological services, public weather services, environmental monitoring services, aviation services, climate services, hydro-meteorological services, power generation, tourism, pilgrimage, sports and adventure, water management, etc.

The ACROSS scheme will also lead to generations of employment by recruiting manpower for its process from forecast services to the delivery of services.

The ACROSS scheme will further aid in fulfilling one of the mandates of the Earth Sciences Ministry to observe the weather, climate, and ocean activities, and conduct research & development activities for economic, societal, and environmental benefits such as addressing the climate change crisis.

What is ACROSS scheme?

The Atmosphere & Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems & Services (ACROSS) scheme comprises the atmospheric science programs of the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The scheme aims at addressing different aspects of weather and climate services.

Who launched ACROSS scheme?

The ACROSS scheme was approved by the Cabinet Committee chaired by PM Narendra Modi in 2018. The Ministry of Earth Sciences works on the implementation of the scheme ACROSS.

(i) Commissioning of Polarimetric Doppler Weather Radars (IMD)

(ii) Upgradation of Forecast System (IMD)

(iii) Weather & Climate Services (IMD)

(iv) Atmospheric Observations Network (IMD)

(v) Numerical Modelling of Weather and Climate (NCMRWF)

(vi) Monsoon Mission III (NCMRWF/IITM/INCOIS/IMD)

(vii) Monsoon Convection, Clouds, and Climate Change (NCMRWF/IITM/IMD)

(viii) High-Performance Computing System (NCMRWF/IITM)
