Central government notifies new evaluation standards for hydrogen cell vehicles

The standards for safety evaluation aims at promoting the environment-friendly and energy-efficient hydrogen fuel cell-based vehicles in the country.

The Central Government on September 24, 2020, notified the standards for safety evaluation for hydrogen fuel-cell based vehicles.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a notification in this regard and notified that the Standards for safety evaluation of vehicles being propelled by the Hydrogen Fuel Cells through an amendment to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

What is the Significance?

The issued notification of the standards for safety evaluation by the ministry aims at promoting the environment-friendly and energy-efficient hydrogen fuel cell-based vehicles in the country.

Standards for safety evaluation of Hydrogen cell vehicles:

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the standards for the testing of such vehicles, which are at par with the International standards, have been made available with the prospective suppliers and manufacturers.

As per the draft rules, the motor vehicles of category M and Category N, running on the compressed gaseous hydrogen fuel cell, will be in accordance with AIS 157:2020, as amended from time to time, until the corresponding Bureau of Indian Standard Act, 2016.
