The CBI arrested Suresh Kalmadi, the chief organizer of Delhi’s corruption-tainted Commonwealth Games on April 25, 2011 alleging him with a conspiracy case in awarding a contract for the Games to a Swiss company at an inflated cost of Rs. 141 crore. The timing-scoring-result (TSR) system contract that was given to Swiss Timing Private Ltd was rigged. The Swiss firm was favoured and a deserving competitor was denied the opportunity despite its being ready with a much lower bid. This wrongful job caused a loss of approximately Rs. 95 crores to the public exchequer.
Kalmadi was suspended from the congress party after his arrest. On April 26, 2011 the Indian Olympic Association dismissed Kalmadi , as its president following his arrest on the graft charges. The senior association vice-president of IOA, Vijay Kumar Malhotra had been named as Kalmadi's interim substitute.
OC secretary-general Lalit Bhanot and director-general V.K. Verma were arrested earlier by the CBI in the same case and are lodged in Delhi's Central Jail, Tihar. The CBI has so far registered eight cases of which three are related to restoration work of two sporting venues, two are related to Queen Baton's relay, while one each is related to overlays, contract given to Swiss Time Keeping, and contract given to SIS live for coverage of the Games.
