Cyclone Jawad update: The remnant of Cyclonic Storm ‘JAWAD’ (WML) over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts weakened into a Low Pressure Area over the same region on December 6, 2021, informed India Meteorological Department.
IMD had earlier said that the Depression over the northwest of Bay of Bengal near north Odisha coast had moved northeastwards and weakened into WML over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts and will weaken further into a low pressure area during next 6 hours.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Director General Atul Karwal said on December 4th that the impact of Cyclonic storm 'Jawad' was not as strong as it was expected.
Cyclonic storm Jawad
Cyclone Jawad had made its landfall on December 4, 2021 about 230 km southeast of Vishakhapatnam, 410 km south-southwest of Puri and 490 km south-southwest of Paradip (Odisha). A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal had intensified into the cyclonic storm 'Jawad', IMD had informed on December 3, 2021.
The centre and state governments had made all preparations to deal with the impact of the cyclone by keeping all agencies on standby to ensure no loss of life and minimise property damage.
Cyclone shelters were set up for people living in low-lying areas and all actions were taken to stock up drinking water, food grains and other essential supplies. Teams from different ministries were also positioned for speedy maintenance and restoration of power, roads, water supply, and other essential services in case of any disruption due to the cyclone.
Farmers were also pre-warned so that they can safeguard their crops to minimize damages to their crops. The fishermen had also been advised not to venture into the sea.
The Konark Festival & International Sand Art Festival was called off following the advisories issued by the Odisha Spl Relief Commissioner in the wake of Cyclonic Storm Jawad.
Background
PM Narendra Modi had chaired a high-level meeting on December 2nd to review preparedness for Cyclone Jawad. During the meeting, PM Modi directed the concerned officials to take all necessary measures to ensure the safe evacuation of people and to ensure maintenance of all essential services and their quick restoration in case of disruption.
A total of 46 NDRF teams were sent to Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh and were deployed there and 18 more teams were on standby. The Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy had deployed ships and helicopters for relief, search and rescue operations. The Air Force and Engineer task force units of the Army were also on standby with boats and rescue equipment. Disaster Relief teams and Medical Teams were are also on standby at the locations along the eastern coast.
All concerned Ministries were also working in synergy to counter the impact of the cyclone-
-The Power Ministry had activated emergency response systems and was keeping in readiness transformers, DG sets and other necessary equipment to ensure immediate restoration of electricity in case of disruption.
-The Communications Ministry also kept all the telecom towers and exchanges under constant watch and is fully prepared to restore the telecom network if disrupted.
-The Health Ministry had also issued an advisory to all States/ UTs that are likely to be affected for health sector preparedness and response to COVID in affected areas.
-The shipping ministry had also taken all measures to secure shipping vessels and has also deployed emergency vessels
