The Delhi Cabinet on 8 November 2011 constituted a three-member committee, under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary P.K. Tripathi, to decide the financial model for the upkeep of bus queue shelters across Delhi. Besides the Chief Secretary, the panel comprises Secretary Transport and Secretary Finance.
There are about 1,600 bus queue shelters in Delhi and are governed and maintained by different agencies, such as New Delhi Municipal Council, the Delhi Transport Corporation and private players, under a public-private-partnership model. There are a total of 1638 bus shelters in the city out of which, 1138 are currently being maintained by a private firm which has been earning revenue through advertisement.
The cabinet decided to bring all the bus queue shelters in Delhi under a nodal agency to bring about uniformity in their maintenance.
The bus shelters were facing the problem of vandalism since companies were not coming forward to take up their maintenance.
High-level committee is to suggest maintenance and create a revenue-earning model for 500 bus Q-shelters constructed in the run up to the Commonwealth Games held in 2010.
