To help reduce the severe air pollution in the NCR, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has proposed doubling parking fees. This measure aims to discourage private vehicle use and improve air quality in the region.
The proposal will be presented during the upcoming MCD House meeting on November 14, where elections for the Delhi Mayor and Deputy Mayor will also take place.
Initially Planned to Increase by Fourfold
The MCD initially planned to raise parking fees by four times as part of Phase II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The plan is designed to reduce air pollution in the capital. However, after discussions, they decided to revise the proposal to a smaller increase—doubling the current parking fees instead.
Who Ordered to Increase Parking Rate?
This step follows the guidelines set by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has already doubled its parking fees under these directions in October.
Increased Parking Rate Not Yet Approved
MCD officials shared that they are waiting for the House’s approval to put this plan in place. If the upcoming meeting faces delays or disruptions, especially with elections going on, the proposal might be postponed.
Other Steps in GRAP Phase II:
Phase II of GRAP includes more actions to reduce air pollution, such as banning coal and wood in restaurants, restricting diesel generators for non-essential use, and raising parking fees to encourage more people to use public transportation.
