In the second chargesheet on the 2G scam filed on 25 April 2001, the CBI charged Kanimozhi, DMK supremo M Karunanidhi’s 43-yearold daughter of conspiring in the 2G spectrum allocation case. Kanimozhi of conspiring with former communications minister A Raja (of DMK) to receive a bribe of Rs 200 crore from Mumbai-based DB Group in return for granting 2G spectrum and licence to DB’s Swan Telecom. The money thus collected was routed to DMK’s Kalaignar TV.
The chargesheet claimed that Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi who held 20% stake in Kalaignar TV was the active brain behind the operations of the same. She was regularly in touch with former telecom minister A Raja regarding the launch of the channel.
Kanimozhi along with Kalaignar TV CEO and co-promoter Sharad Kumar, Cineyug Films’ Karim Morani and DB Group’s Asif Balwa and Rajiv B Agarwal were also named in the chargesheet for conspiracy and under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Kanimozhi, Kumar and Morani were asked to appear before the special 2G scam court on 6 May 2011.
The second chargesheet filed by CBI focused on the money trail from DB Realty, headed by Shahid Balwa and Vinod Goenka, to Kalignar TV. The chargesheet mentioned that Sharad Kumar, the director and CEO of Kalaignar TV, attended and chaired all the board meetings where the decision to engage in the Rs 200 crores transaction with Cineyug were taken.
