Hiroshima-based automaker, Mazda declared on 18 November 2010 that US carmaker Ford Motor will sell the bulk of its 11 percent stake in Mazda Motor. Ford with the selling of the 11% stake will lose its status as majority shareholder in the Japanese firm for the first time since 1979. Ford had been the top shareholder in the Hiroshima-based automaker since 1979 and had several times owned more than a third of Mazda. Ford started cutting its stake in 2008 in the wake of the global financial crisis.
