General Than Shwe

Myanmar’s military ruler General Than Shwe was on a five-day visit to India from 25 July to 29 July 2010. Shwe visited Jamshedpur in Jharkhand on 28 July 2010. The Myanmar Automobile and Diesel Industries, a Government of Myanmar enterprise, had inked a deal in 2009 with the Tata Motors. On 27 July 2010 India and Myanmar agreed on "close cooperation" between the security forces of the two countries to tackle terrorism. A treaty on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters was signed. This treaty would be crucial in enabling India to get to insurgents from the Northeast states who continue to take shelter along the India-Myanmar border. Five pacts were signed covering a range of issues like counter-terror cooperation, enhanced energy ties and collaboration in a string of developmental projects. Pacts in the areas of small development projects, science and technology and information cooperation were also signed.  A memorandum of understanding was inked, according to which India would assist the restoration of the Ananda temple in Bagan, a renowned Buddhist shrine and a major tourist site in central Myanmar.
